Pilates Method®

REFORMER · CADILLAC · CHAIR · MAT

Achmed recognized the benefits of the classical Pilates Method® as a perfect rehab regimen for dancers recovering from dance-related injuries and surgeries besides offering the best exercise programs for building core strength, for stretching/toning to improve mobility and coordination, and to improve & maintain overall fitness for anyone.

An individual movement practice in Achmed’s studio

While dancing with the Sacramento Ballet in 1986, a decade after his open right-knee surgery in The Netherlands, Achmed tore the medial meniscus and cross ligaments in his left knee. It is the kind of injury that is not at all uncommon in the ballet world. Fortunately, at that time, St. Francis Hospital in San Francisco featured one of the first and most advanced Sports & Dance Medicine clinics in the country. It was established and headed by Dr. Garrick, an orthopedic surgeon famous for treating and rehabilitating top athletes and dancers back into performing condition. He had co-developed and advanced the techniques of joint microsurgeries to a masterful level.

The hospital’s Physical Therapy Department was headed by a P.T. who had danced as the Principal ballerina at the Oakland Ballet a few years earlier during which she studied and practiced the Pilates techniques under coaches who had been trained by Joseph Pilates himself. After retiring from her dance career, she earned her MA in Physical Therapy and developed the Pilates Method™ into a legitimate medical rehabilitation program under the supervision of Dr. Garrick. A day after surgery Achmed was introduced to an intense, personalized rehab program focused on stabilizing, strengthening, lengthening, and mobilizing all the musculature surrounding his left knee in particular and the posture and movement patterns of his entire body to support the regaining of his professional dance performance level in the shortest span of time possible, incorporating correct breathing techniques, rhythm and flow.

Achmed became an inspired and enthusiastic Pilates aficionado and was able to teach and choreograph at an intense dance summer camp in Colorado within less than a month. Ever since this first radical introduction to the Pilates Method®, he has continued studying and perfecting his expertise in integrating the Pilates technique and principles within the entire scope of teaching movement & dance classes and in his body-mind healing practice.

In graduate school at UCI, Achmed completed a course in the Pilates Method for dance students. During his 2-year tenure as a UNLV faculty member, he maintained weekly Pilates centered physical therapy sessions at Keith Kleven’s Orthopedic P.T. clinic with Dolly Kelepecz. While serving as the ballet master/rehearsal director of The Los Angeles Ballet & Modern Dance Company, Achmed continued his weekly Pilates training at the Pilates West Physical Therapy in West Hollywood. Moving to Sedona in 1997, he continued his body re-alignment practices by complementing it with a yearlong regimen of 3-weekly intense myofascial release sessions at Therapy on the Rocks under the late John Barnes and Lori Zeltwanger. During this period of deep self-care, Achmed taught dance, Pilates mat-based stretch & tone, yoga, and water aerobics classes at the Hilton Spa where he also served as the lead massage therapist. For the next decade he served as an independent contractor as an instructor, therapist, intuitive counselor, dream analyst and HD analyst at all the major resorts & spas in the Sedona and VOC area including Los Abrigados, the Rouge, and Mii Amo among others. After his 3-year sojourn in Hawaii, he returned to Sedona. Achmed has taught and coached ballet at several private studios and coached pre-professional dancers for the Sedona Chamber Ballet and instructed Pilates to private clients at various local studios until he opened his own home studio in 2011.

Reflections on Pilates instruction and the group practice that grew from it.

Pilates instruction

Achmed Valk is a truly gifted teacher and healer. I would consider him to be a Master of Pilates. As Chairman of a ballet company I am often asked to make recommendations to professional, pre professional and student dancers. I had to be sure that the Pilates instructor was a true master with a comprehensive understanding of human anatomy as well as the human spirit and human design. All his students, clients and associates recognize Achmed Valk as a master ballet teacher, master Pilates instructor, Human Design expert and massage therapist. His understanding of not only the body but the mind makes him a truly amazing talent. Achmed has students and clients from all over the world as they recognize his gift. He comprehends and teaches that one must understand the intricate balance of nutrition, fitness, wellness, and mental health in achieving a peaceful and holistic peace of mind and strong fit body. Achmed Valk is truely a gift to the Verde Valley. A class with Achmed is the first step to true whole body and mind wellness.

Pilates and the evolving Stretch and Tone group class

I was excited about Achmed starting a class again, and immediately said ‘I’m in!’. Years ago, I had been in his ballet class, his core work for dancers class, and his floor Pilates class. I appreciated his profound expertise, his infinite variety of exercises, his ability to meet the needs of the class, and his eye for detail. Most of all, my body had responded extremely well to whatever we were doing.

This time, the group would be small in his private space in Camp Verde. I liked that even better! First, I called it ‘Pilates’, then we started naming the class ‘Stretch and Tone’. During the year, the class has morphed into a deeper experience. We still work with the body, emphasizing strengthening the core, but non-physical components have been added. Achmed brings in his expert interest in philosophy and human design. He sets a theme for each class and takes us on journeys with a meaning beyond the body and beyond the mind. We connect with other frequencies, with the bigger picture, yet via the body and in a grounded way. For me, this gives an additional significance to the time we spend together. I love my weekly class with Achmed and my class buddies! We are a team!

I met Achmed Valk 15 years ago. 25 years ago, in Philadelphia, where I lived, I was introduced to Joseph Pilates and his method. I attended group mat classes every Saturday morning with an ex-dancer. It was a revelation. Every move made so much sense. It was hard work, too. I went to this class for several years, learning about the theory behind this beautiful timeless discipline. The studio then introduced several reformers and discontinued the mat classes, to my dismay. But then, I learned the power of the classic sequences on the reformer and continued for years.

When I arrived in Sedona, eager to continue the practice, I found Achmed and discovered an even higher level of work on the reformer. He refined my movements and tailored them to my needs.

My needs have grown with aging, and Achmed's deep anatomical knowledge has certainly helped me deal with those recent concerns. Whether beginner or advanced, Achmed will help you discover the ingenious benefits of the Pilates method.
